The weekend. Thank goodness for that. Saturday brought along a party night - not what I truly expected. A Hen's Night not in town was entertaining, but then Jana encouraged me to go out. Ended up at Reds and I shook off my drunken sleepiness to have a really good time. Hi to those I saw, good times :D
The photo's not the funniest of the night (that's something never to resurface), but the crowd during my first experience in their dance room. Total club shot.

Sunday: work, then extreme exhaustion in the hours after following a mere 5 hours sleep. Not that that's unbearable but doing it for a week straight takes its toll. Still, my brother convinced me to watch Apocalypse Now with him at 10pm - not the greatest idea. However, although I was drifting half the time, I'm glad I made the effort. It's such an intense film, I really think I need to watch it again. Partly because I was marvelling at how much Charlie and Emilio look like Martin (Sheen) when he was young:

On Monday (now day 21, can you believe it?!), there was time to do another task. I intended to use TINAB as a dream catcher as specified on page 158...

1: Was with a different mum and we were living below the poverty line. There were roadworks in front of the Mitcham Library and although we were in the right lane, 'Mum' got out by the petrol station next door and started yelling at somebody. They were trying to argue that it was about to finished - but it didn't matter. Went 'home' to a set of housing trust units (ours was hidden at the back). Made lunch (a simple sandwich) and went back to make another complaint. Felt awkward as a (smaller) kid just standing there eating my food and still feeling hungry while 'Mum' continued her complaining. A brother was at home but not sure if he followed us out.

2: Remember being aware of listening to Michael Buble's song Just Haven't Met You Yet and the rest of the new album. That's all.

Photo comes from the commotion on North Terrace (main Adelaide city road) that afternoon. A couple carjacked a driver at gunpoint, crashed the car into an unmarked police car; the man had a scuffle with a cop, stole his gun and went to rob two banks on Henley Beach Road. It literally stopped traffic.

Tuesday (meant to be today, but at 12:21am it's now yesterday): open at work until 9. Poor Tracy had the dreaded 12-hr shift. So she made a countdown behind the counter. This is her crossing off another half-hour. Gold.

Tuesday, December 22, 2009

Last Monday (14-12) was a day off (as always, because of afternoon commitments on a certain radio station...), and with a Christmas party to look forward to I decided - actually no, I was coerced into doing it - to bake a cake. From scratch. Me, cook. Now for those who don't know me that well, cooking's never been my forte. Burnt melted butter in high school Home Ec once and never recovered. So for me, anything past grilling and microwaving is a big deal.
I was up for the challenge. Looking through a cake cookbook, I settled on the first (and safest) recipe: a basic Victorian sponge cake. Even I could handle that. Had a few minor setbacks while mixing, and I shouldn't have lined the tin with paper on the sides so much - but I stuck to the recipe and it looked... edible at least. But when I decorated it it looked quite amazing for my standards. It was a hit with the girls and the final product before consumption is my photographic choice for the day. To say I was proud of myself is an understatement.

Unfortunately the group task was a no-go. But signs for it happening eventually are positive!

Tuesday was a quiet day - missed out on a work shift and didn't venture out of the house until 8:30 to go to The Ed. Which had a line AGAIN (so not bothering anymore). Ended up at Cocolat on Rundle:

But during this day at home I thought I'd actually get something else written in the book. Or stuck. Pages 65-66 have a container to transport an object of my choosing; in the form of a metal case, it's defined by them is: 'an object that can be used to hold or transport something'. So to have something smaller than TINAB itself, I stuck a receipt from a boutique in Surfers Paradise in there so I remember the address of the place for my next visit. Which is hopefully soon; it was on the 13-12 last year that I returned from the most fantabulous and perspective-changing Goldy trip ever.
Then I jumped to pages 109-110, which say: This is an excerpt from another book. 1: Pull a book off your bookshelf. 2: Open it at a random page. 3: Write the first sentence you see here. Because I was thinking about possible travel ideas that included Amsterdam I had an urge to grab The Diary of Anne Frank (btw, if you've never read it shame on you). Page 190 had the start of a diary entry as follows:

Dear Kitty,
I was upstairs this morning, since I promised Mrs van D. I'd read her some of my stories.

I really want to read it again.

Day 16 saw me go to the Sherlock Holmes preview screening (check out my review, up on the CPR site now), then have travel talks with the girls. Have worked out a rough itinerary and now need to go to a travel agent! Yay!

Day 17 (Thurs): really interesting. Had my ABC Tour Guides End of Year function and decided to go on a tour of the Adelaide Oval. We went INSIDE the century-old scoreboard. I actually felt honoured. They still use everything old-school, nothing hugely technical, and between two and eight people work in there at any given time. The record to change the info around between a test innings is I think six minutes or something. For hard labour across four floors, incredible...

My photo however was from the final hurrah. The guide (ironic that it was us taking a tour haha) LET US ON THE TURF. Hardly had enough time to take it in but I feel enormously privileged. Hence this image:

And day 18 to finish the working week had another 21st, this time the beautiful Claire who I've known since primary school and bonded with through karate (yes that's right, we're black belts hah!). So although the party also included some crazy dance moves and the revelation that Rosh loves Love Shack almost as much as me, the photo is a tame one with me and the birthday girl.

As well as TINAB, I'm completing a summer list and have gotten a few things ticked off. Receipts from as early as 2003 have been cleaned out, but more importantly the missing pieces of my Cut Print Review collage have been slotted in. My photo of the day shows my wall feature with all the films I've reviewed/opinionated(!) on since I started writing for the site about 15 months ago:

To other tasks, and after a really slack three days I decided to make use of my bus trip to work and do another entry. This one really intrigued me and I wasn't sure whether I'd fill the page with my answers. But as per usual with these things, I was struggling for room. Page 192 was about 'a parallel universe'; what would my world be like if everything was the opposite of what it is now?...

***
Instead of a mum, dad and brother I'd have a dad, mum and sister. I would be a PR graduate rather than a journalist. I would loathe movies and TV. If hospitality's the opposite of retail then that's what I'd be working in. I'd have a long-term boyfriend. Both my grandpas would've seen me grow up and graduate. Overseas trips would be the norm. I wouldn't have tears welling up while writing this. Wouldn't be writing this on the bus either (like I was supposed to). I'd be the youngest child. All my closest friends would be male. I would be male. Does this mean I'd be a version of my brother? I'd rarely go to concerts. I'd hate Kylie, Gyroscope, etc. My playing sport of choice would be AFL or (gasp) netball. I wouldn't have loving, hilarious friends. I'd hate Facebook and Twitter. I'd have hated uni. I'd be Italian or American - depends on what you view as opposite. Wouldn't have woken up with cramps in my legs this morning. Really wouldn't like hanging out with the family. I'd be the youngest of my cousins, and the same gender as most. Other things I won't mention here. I wouldn't have an interesting life. Because I do have an interesting life.

Yesterday's (Day 12) 21st ended up being a good night. However, it must be noted as the first I'd managed to experience so far with a stripper show (unbeknownst to the lad in front of family :/ ). It was really something. Below are Penny and Jana during the show. Impressed? Hm. Awkward? Just a little:

Today ended up having a series of known events but with random consquences. Had to go to church... turns out Croydon has a new priest flown in from Melbourne with plans to shake things up to get the young people back in. More English (very handy), no candles at the front (gasp!) and the guts to shut the old ladies up. There was an outraged lady screaming outside after and it was intense. Afterwards, one of my 2nd cousins (he's 2) would hardly let go of my legs and proceed to dribble all over my jeans. Ew. And then I had my Fresh Xmas BBQ, where there was a good amount of cricket and for some, rowboat rides in the lake. Today's photo is of Meg supposedly having enough (but really trying to push their boat over the completely shallow part). At least there's no chance of drowning!

There is interest in completing a group task tomorrow night... oh how that would balance out my tasks to date!

Thursday, December 10, 2009

Ok, so this could be the most pointless blog in history (because I haven't done any extra tasks - major sadness.) but as part of completing the book, I am determined to show every photo for this month. So here goes.

Day 8: Went to an early media screening (of British comedy In The Loop, which I don't think comes out here until January but it has everywhere else... that really shits me when they do that), so was in town before 9. Therefore, not as many people crowding Adelaide's most famous meeting place. And with the pretty Christmas decorations I couldn't resist. Who doesn't love the Malls Balls?

Day 9: Lots of walking around. Plenty of visits to the local library this week too, which is good. Refamiliarising. But I found this particularly amusing in the reserve as I walked out to go home. Just follow the arrow. And that I did.

Day 10: today. Knew I was going for a workout and then off to work. Thought I'd do the right thing and park in the actual Westfield staff carpark At Mitsubishi 5-10 mins away (however, I'm okay with it because it's in my general direction. Sucks for the Glenelg/hills people). Eventually found it after going through the opposite entrance and then realising I wasn't where I should be. But I persisted - I want a free $25 gift card dammit! Today's photo is merely the point at the bus stop. Oh so interesting.

Sorry to bore you stupid with that. Seems a slight let down from such a busy week before. Will try for more interesting events soon, promise.

TINAB: Days 5-7

While I realise it's the 10th I don't think having six days worth of content is viable here. Day 5 was a day I'd been looking forward to for months. Had no work, and an afternoon full of good vibes and plenty of dancing. But not at Stereosonic like the rest of Adelaide. I was where those NOT at Stereo were - A Day on the Green at Peter Lehmann Wines in the Barossa Valley.

Why would I, a 20-year-old, go there over Stereo? Well, these tickets went on sale months before, and I wasn't going to miss out on the first Australian tour The B-52's have done in my lifetime. That's right, the Rock Lobster and Love Shack people. They're still around. And they kick arse. With Mental As Anything and The Proclaimers as supports it was actually a really well-rounded show. We had a very large group of Scots next to us who knew all the words to every Proclaimers song... when 500 Miles came on my auntie and I went down the aisle to where a few of them were waving their Scottish flag and grabbed it. We were all singing (horribly I might add), waving the flag and it was the funniest thing I've done in ages.

My latest TINAB task came a bit before this (for I still had it in full view of course)... page 124: 'This is a MOMENT IN TIME. This day will never happen again. Document it's passing.' So I wrote:

"Red Red Wine by UB40's blasting over the speakers at A Day on the Green in between Mental As Anything and The Proclaimers and everyone's singing along. I'm to Mum's right and Angela, Toula and Tanya's left; we're chilling with riesling, food and anticipation for The B-52's!"

I would've missed the day if I'd written about it all. But the concert was rad, they played most of my favourites, and to hear Love Shack live, my fave song of ALL TIME, was incredible. To say I went nuts is an understatement. And Rock Lobster as the encore went OFF. The photo pick for the day is hard (there's a particularly funny one involving chocolate) but below is of the band, as close as I could get before the reserved seating. I've just realised the idiot in the cap is very reminiscent of the puppet from Hey Hey It's Saturday. Gilbert?

All in all, it was an amazingly awesome day with the (family) girls, with perfect weather and great atmosphere.

Day 6 wasn't very eventful but the photo shows my excitement from the concert continuing. Worn this T-shirt twice already... <3 id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5413403952931941698" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 240px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 320px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbUVwhbd8u4lSoxTFJGCi-nH-54JExRrDcEXq3DGvwyuyQsvFESelt2D_oooc1wN38No9VcbpqU6Tm1ZDqMZQezuuwcu7o6KYVoDPP4QCFFghXmYpkqtwLl9MYWfGEQymhMO2X/s320/IMG_1554.JPG" border="0">
Day 7: same, but it marked the last day of my first challenge. During the week of placing TINAB in full view, it's gone with me to work, the gym, a festival, The Ed, coffee, the movies, and Fresh at least. Here we had a minor water spillage (sssh!) but TINAB was spared. Anyway, the studio is my photographic choice for this day so you can see where the magic comes from!

I really need to get cracking on these tasks. But so little time! Doing this AND the contents of my list aren't happening at a great pace :/ Having said that, stuff is getting done. So that has to be positive.

Friday, December 04, 2009

So the past two days have been hectic. Just a bit. No additional tasks were done yesterday because of commitments. However, my first stop of the day provided the perfect photo op:

For those who don't know, it's the ABC Adelaide building in Collinswood. I help conduct group tours there voluntarily and I had a shift yesterday morning. Had a great time with a bunch of home-schooled kids and mums who were sometimes more interested in the workings of TV than the kids! Saw the set of Poh's Kitchen for the first time so I was pretty stoked... it's HUGE! I learn or see something new everytime I'm in that place.

Introduced TINAB to more of my workmates, so they knew why it was behind our front counter. It's become too cosy there - somehow I managed to forget it. Totally regretted that this morning. Waking up at 5:15AM and realising wasn't a good feeling. Starting to really want this book around. I hope that doesn't sound desperately sad. Why was I up so early you ask? It wasn't even for a Fresh shift...

Sunrise was doing a live broadcast from Elder Park this morning. Mel and I thought 'What a better way to network...' However, transport doesn't get into town as early as 5:30AM (ridiculous) so we got there by 6:15 or so. Mel brought red cowboy hats (as our Xmas costume), and I'd made a sign at midnight last night on shiny paper saying 'Spread the Xmas cheer. Give us a job' (with a golden sun as the 'o' in job, haha). Awesome cooked breakfast, live crosses to Nuala Hafner for the weather (who loved our 'Xmas Cowgirls' idea and showed a crew member our awesome sign), and performances from Guy Sebastian AND Hugh Sheridan (who actually sounded decent live). Didn't meet Mel and Kochie, although Mel saw our sign and smiled, but did meet newsreader (and now idol) Natalie Barr. So lovely and chatty, and loved that we'd finished a journo degree. Therefore, out of plenty of options, this photo counts for Day 4:

Then I caught a bus to work for a 9-5:30 shift, where the driver physically laughed at me in my hat through his rearview mirror. So I'm tired. But other tasks were completed. Thought I'd try my hand at Page 7, which Spratt attempted at the Ed on Tuesday. I managed to hold TINAB above my head for 21 minutes (much longer than him, that's all I'll say). Now I have a sore shoulder to show for it. Page 88 was an interesting idea too: a methodology. How many ways you can carry something that 'isn't' a book - testing their examples out and creating five more. Mine were:
1: In between fingers.
2: Tied to thigh (this works better for paperbacks).
3: Tied to arm.
4: As an earring.
5: Like a backpack.
This was after I'd carried it by my knees, elbows, on my head, etc. The good ol' balance on the head trick was a personal favourite. If you ever try the waistband example, it may not be feasible to be wearing pyjamas.

So I have begun my summer quest to complete This Is Not A Book (TINAB). And the one thing that's sticking in my head and won't leave until I remember right now is: how much I would regret using a pen to write in there. A pencil is what I need. Oh the days of writing in pencil. As my new workmate Regina put it, who writes with the lead after they get their pen licence? Me now, that's who.

So Day 1 and 2 have passed. Yesterday I decided to start with two major tasks. Page 1 of course, is to take it with me everywhere for a week and try to keep it in full view. I've taken it to the gym twice, work twice (left behind the counter, which has gained some interesting responses from my friends, my manager is yet to discover it to my knowledge), and on the bus (where I completed some imagery on a picture of the sea on pages 8 & 9, hence why I need a pencil). Oh, The Ed too. That's right, a hotspot. Arguably the biggest place in Adelaide on a Tuesday night. Took me 40 mins to get in (since WHEN is there a line at The Ed btw?!); eventually sat down in the Front Bar and got it out. The proudest moment was when my mate Spratt was so interested he took on a challenge for himself. Page 7: 'This is a test of ENDURANCE. Hold TINAB above your head for as long as possible.'
So he did. Check out the photo:

How long for? I'll let you guess. But this photo is the result of my second continuing task. Page 62: 'This is a COMMITMENT (*love the capitals). Do one thing of the list every day for a month. Personally, anyone who knows me would've said TAKE A PHOTO!!! But I started with the intention to draw something everyday. I can't draw. Therefore the photo choice was a no-brainer. So photo #2 is from today, Mel looking at cakes during wedding cake tasting at Goodwood Road's Sugar & Spice. Yum yum:

Long day today. Didn't complete any other tasks. But I have months. So I'm off for now.

My Melbourne 'Unies' trip let me discover many things. One of those was this grand new release 'book' called This Is Not A Book. Funny that I discover it in a bookstore away from home, but I couldn't resist. It was staring at me from the counter. It was red, and had a scribbled title which intrigued me. And I hadn't bought a book in ages (from an actual bookstore). So I bought it.

And it's not a book. Might be in the shape of one, but it's telling me it could be something that could change my life. A series of 'tasks' fill the pages, asking you to do things outside the square. What a perfect way to spend the summer. And summer it is... fitting that I decide to grab it this morning and realise it's December 1st. Woah. December. The first 'official' day of summer. Sweet.

I've yet to look through it all but thought I'd be logical to start with and begin on page 1. The task is as follows:

This is an inconvenience. Take This Is Not A Book everywhere you go for one week. You must place it in full view at all times.

So if you see a red book poking out of my bag or on the table over the next 7 days you know why. And I'm daring you not to be curious. The goal is to get through everything in the next few months. You can help me if you wish. Because this thing with pages that apparently isn't what it's meant to be is sticking around.
